September 13: Merry Christmas

Here we are trapped in Brno.

It's miserable. Outside of our hotel, emergency vehicles - police and fire - are stationed on the road. All over, rivers are rising and people are being evacuated.

We spent the morning thinking about what we could do to stay awake while we are in Brno. By mid afternoon, we decided to go to the somewhat famous Vegetable Market where there is a literal labryinth of tunnels underground and we could see how the people of Brno aged their wine and beer in the Good Old Days. We presented ourselves to the reception of the hotel and asked for a cab to be called. However after trying for several minutes she was unable to summon one as none seemed to be around or accepting fares. We were not entirely certain but after she tried hard to get us a ride, we decided we would walk. It was a 25 minute hike according to Google Maps. We had on our rain coats and a hotel umbrella; we were wearing our light weight pants so that we would have our jeans for the bike tomorrow.

That didn't last long. We walked about ten minutes, which was plenty, believe me, and we saw a pub in the square and that was going to be enough of an outing.

We drank beer. It was good. That is pretty much the end of today's events.

The bar had this incredible copper dome over the serving station. It looked too elaborate to be purely decoration and I wondered if it had been some kind of vent-hood in a kitchen but no, just decoration according to the bartender. Unless he didn[t understand my question. Or was just making it up.

This is a little local "art" where we walked today.

"Ornament is a crime"

The two flags are the Euro Zone and Czechia.

Outside the pub, people (and their dogs) waiting for their tram.

We did have something good today, aside from the beer. We had dinner in our hotel again. This hotel is defiinitely "boutique" in nature. Only 30 rooms, it is hard for me to imagine how even if full all the time, they can make ends meet.  But all hotels in Europe seem to have some kind of dining area as every hotel serves a buffet breakfast. However, our hotel serves other meals as well and we have been amazed at the quality of the food. For one thing, they bake their own bread and at breakfast, I noticed they make their own yogurt. At dinner they offer a cream of cauliflower soup with truffle and we had it two nights in a row. Outstanding. And we each have had two amazing meals each there, and tonight we both had beef cheeks with young vegetables and mashed potatoes served with a beef reduction that was amazing. Being a Friday night and because the food has been so good, Nan asked at reception if we needed to make a reservation for dinner. There were two other tables in the restaurant when we went down.

Our plan is to move on tomorrow but we'll see when the time comes.
